Gail said, “Maybe I can look at your books and help out with getting things back in order, so that you can get out from under your debt a little,” she said. “I helped my father some with his business records and I’m good with numbers. This can be part of how I contribute to our … ugh, your ranch.”

He stared ahead at the ground and Gail began to think that she had insulted his manly pride by offering. She opened her mouth and took in air to try to clarify her statement although she had not quite figured out what she was going to say when he interrupted.

Luke asked, “What book are you talking about? Like a book about running a ranch or something?”

Gail paused and stared at him a moment as they left the town of Davenport and followed the trail out into the hills.

“Book? No, I mean like your account books that show what you owe and what you have coming in.”

He stared forward and his eyes went out of focus as if she were speaking a foreign language to him.

He finally said, “At the bank, they just had me sign a paper each time I took more money and they make a note when I bring more back cutting it off.”

“But there is interest accumulating,” she said.

He nodded.

“Yeah, I suppose.”

“How have you tracked what you paid and what you owe, Luke?”

He took a deep breath.

“Well, I figure I always owe something and I pay what I can. That’s about all I can do.”

Gail licked her lips.

“Well, the first thing I’m going to do is set up account books and get a record of what you owe and what you’ve paid. At the very least, you’ll know if the bank is cheating you or not.”

Luke laughed.

“Isn’t it just safer and cheaper to save the paper and just assume that they are?”

“No.”

Gail reached out and patted his shoulder. She felt the strength in him again and she drew back her hand. She hoped he couldn’t see the red in her face, but she saw the red in his tanned cheeks a little too.

“It is most definitely not cheaper to just let others keep track of your debt for you.”

“Won’t that be what you are doing for me?”

She narrowed her eyes.

“Well, yes, but unlike them, I’ll be on your team.”

“Having someone on my team will be a welcomed change, Gail from Davenport.”

She smiled.

He held up one gloved hand off his horse’s reins and said, “If I might make one suggestion though.”

She tilted her head. “Of course, anything, Luke.”

“Instead of making your number books first, you may want to do that second.”

She shook her head.

“What would be first, then?”

He waved his hand in her direction.

“A bath. You are muddier than Oklahoma.”

He tried to contain his smile, but he enjoyed his little joke too much to keep it in.

Gail wagged a finger at him.

“You watch those boundaries, Luke Butler. I might spill you out of the saddle myself.”

“I’ve been threatened worse by far less pretty scoundrels, Gail.
